GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B do different jobs
GSTR-1 reports your outward supplies invoice by invoice and is what populates your customers' input credit — file it wrong and you damage their credit, not just your own record. GSTR-3B is the summary return where liability is computed and paid. Because they draw on the same underlying sales, the department compares them, and an unexplained difference between the two is one of the most routine reasons for a query. Reconcile them before filing rather than after.
Returns file in sequence, so one gap blocks everything
GST returns must be filed in order. A missed period cannot be skipped — the next return will not go through until the gap is closed, and late fees accrue on every pending period at once. Sustained non-filing also opens cancellation proceedings under REG-17. This is why a nil return matters: it can be filed in minutes, even by SMS, and it keeps the chain unbroken. Restoring a cancelled registration is far more work than filing a nil return was.
Pick the right ITR form before you start
Filing on the wrong form makes the return defective, and a defective return that is not corrected in time is treated as never filed — taking your carry-forward of losses with it. In broad terms: ITR-1 for simple salary and one house property within limits; ITR-2 once capital gains or multiple properties appear; ITR-3 for business or professional income with books; ITR-4 for presumptive income under 44AD or 44ADA. Capital gains are the usual reason someone outgrows ITR-1 without noticing.
Filing is not complete until it is verified
An unverified income-tax return is not a filed return. You have 30 days from submission to e-verify through Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a pre-validated bank account. Miss that window and the return becomes invalid, and the consequences are those of never having filed — including late fees and lost loss carry-forward, even though you did the work on time. Verify the same day you file; there is no advantage in waiting.
Reconcile first, file second
Almost every notice arising from a return could have been prevented by a check that takes minutes. For GST, match GSTR-2B against your purchase register before claiming input credit. For income tax, download Form 26AS and the AIS and reconcile them against your own records — the department already has that data, and a return that disagrees with it invites a mismatch notice. The reconciliation tools cover both checks.
Frequently asked questions
What is GSTR-3B?
GSTR-3B is the monthly/quarterly GST summary return where you declare outward supplies, ITC claimed and net GST paid. File by the due date to avoid interest and late fees.

For individuals filing ITR-1/ITR-2 it was 31 July 2026; ITR-3/ITR-4 non-audit filers have until 31 August 2026. If the date has passed, a belated return under Section 139(4) is possible until 31 December 2026 with a late fee and 234A interest.
