A calculator is only as current as its figures
Every number in Indian tax computation carries an assessment year, and most of them change. Slab rates, the section 87A rebate, standard deduction, capital-gains rates and exemption thresholds are all revised periodically. The calculators here are built for AY 2026-27, and the same statutory constants drive the calculators and the written guidance, so the two cannot drift apart. Anywhere else, check which year a figure is stated for before you rely on it.
Compare the two regimes on your own numbers
The new regime is the default, so doing nothing selects it. Whether it is right for you depends entirely on the deductions you can genuinely claim. Large rent with HRA, a full 80C and home-loan interest can tip the balance to the old regime; few deductions favour the new. The point most comparisons miss is HRA — it is often the single largest deduction for anyone renting, and leaving it out makes the new regime look better than it is for that taxpayer.
Understand the ₹12 lakh nil-tax point properly
Income up to ₹12 lakh attracting no tax under the new regime is a consequence of the section 87A rebate, not of the slab structure. Two things follow. The rebate is available only to resident individuals — not to non-residents and not to HUFs. And it does not extend to income taxed at special rates, such as capital gains on listed equity. So it is entirely possible to be under ₹12 lakh in total income and still owe tax after selling shares.
Gross figures, net figures, and which one a tool wants
Most calculation errors are input errors. HRA works on basic salary plus dearness allowance, not on CTC. Gratuity uses last drawn basic plus DA. Capital gains need the full cost of acquisition, which includes stamp duty, registration, brokerage and capital improvements — not just the purchase price. Reverse GST computation starts from a tax-inclusive amount, ordinary GST from an exclusive one. Check which figure the field is asking for before reading anything into the result.
An estimate is a planning number
These tools compute the statutory formula correctly, but they work from what you enter and cannot see the rest of your position — other income, carried-forward losses, relief under a treaty, or an ongoing assessment. Use the output to plan, to compare options and to sanity-check what someone else has computed for you. For anything material, confirm the final position against your full records or with a professional before filing. If you want the reasoning rather than the number, the learning guides explain the provisions behind each calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Are all the calculators really free?
Yes — every calculator is 100% free with no signup. They are for estimation; verify with a licensed CA for your specific figures.
Which calculator compares the two tax regimes?
Use the Income Tax Calculator (AY 2026-27) — it computes your tax under both the old and new regimes and shows which saves you more.
How do I calculate HRA exemption?
HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is the minimum of: (a) actual HRA received, (b) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, (c) 50% of basic salary (metro) or 40% (non-metro). Our HRA calculator computes this in seconds.
What is the GST rate on most services?
Most services attract 18% GST, and some — healthcare and education among them — are exempt. Since 22 September 2025 the general slabs are Nil, 5% and 18%, with 40% on a short list of demerit goods; the 12% and 28% slabs were withdrawn. Verify the current rate for your own supply on cbic-gst.gov.in.
